Myanmar uni students rush to learn Thai

YANGON : Thai is proving popular among Myanmar students at Yangon University of Foreign Languages.

The three-year Thai language programme was initiated in 2010 in anticipation of the establishment of the Asean Economic Community [AEC] in 2015.

Currently, about 200 Myanmar students are enrolled in the Thai language programme.

Even though Myanmar is very far back in terms of country development compare to Thailand. Their education is already better than the Thai education system. I have friends who work in Myanmar, they constantly praise about Myanmar workers, a big change and difference.

Those Burmese students will end up working in Burma anyway, because 1000's of Thai industries are planning on moving to Burma and Cambodia as soon as the ASEAN free trade arrangements kick in. Business owners and industrialists are absolutely thrilled with the prospects of ASEAN. There's cheaper labor to the north, south, east and west. Thai workers on the other hand will be out of work and wondering why the doubled minimum wage isn't working out the way they hoped. Oops.

With the AEC opening on the way, the Burmese students are showing good sense. I wonder how many Thai students are studying Burmese.
