New passenger fee okayed

Airline passengers may have to pay an additional 50 baht per flight from the middle of next year to fund an improved passenger processing system.

The Civil Aviation Board approved a proposal seeking to impose a 50-baht passenger fee yesterday.

Transport Minister Chadchat Sittipunt, chairman of the Civil Aviation Board, said the proposed fee for the Advance Passenger Processing (APP) system will apply to passengers entering and leaving the country.

I assume this automated system is for Thai only passengers, foreign nationals will still have to fill out immigration forms, even though they have Biometric passports and queue at immigration desks, if so why are we paying an extra ฿50?, this also begs the question of what the ฿700 airport departure tax is being used for

This is an area ripe for some eager and enterprising person or company to come up with a secure globally recognized and approved system for efficiently processing frequent international travelers. Here in the USA we have two systems called GOES (International) and SENTRI (Mexico only). I can come and go, in and out of the USA, bypassing the old fashioned formal "standing in line" at immigration method by simply swiping my secure Global Entry "Trusted Traveler" card at the kiosk. Don't reinvent the wheel, Thailand, take what's already available and improve on it.
