Crackdown on fried bananas

BANGKOK - Starting from Monday, Pom Prap Sattru Phai district of Bangkok will clamp down on illegal vendors of fried bananas who take up space in traffic lanes.

Suwat Tansatien, the assistant to the district director, said the district authority met with six authorised fried banana shops to discuss the regulation of street vendors with the aim of curbing traffic congestion.

The shops will be required to submit photographs of their employees to the authorities. They will also be strictly prohibited from selling to cars on the streets. A violation carries a maximum penalty of a 2,000 baht fine. The new ordinance will come into effect on Monday.

Great job! Deprive the poorer people of making a living. Those vendors are a huge problem in Bangkok. They cause way more social problems than the drugs, illegal casinos, prostitution, pirated goods all over pratunam, patpong, kosarn and pantip, just in case someone would like to know. These vendors are not causing any traffic or social problems. They are making a living and now they are under fire from people who are continuously caught on cam taking bribes in the streets. You can find many of these videos on youtube. Let's really think here and make better choices on who should we go after.

and this makes the headlines? Make the police look pretty incompetent at solving any real crimes

So is this another attempt by the pretty lady government to make it tough for people to earn money HONESTLY. The owner of the business might be rich but, the guys running to sell to drivers are working hard to make an honest living. Not everyone can make money by gettng kickbacks from mega projects. Go down charoenkrung road from rama 3 road, the stretch that takes you the court. You will find food vendors FULLY occupying the footpath. Some actually serve food on stools that are laid out on the road. But those guys pay money for sure. Stop believing this government.

Why are all these fuss that needs so many smartly dressed for Monday civil servants for photo taking? Why All these awfully written billboards? By directing cars to go to designated driveway in front of their stalls would solve this problem. Please don't need to mobilize so many unnecessary people for photo taking. Sick of this!

IAN D13: "Actually it is the ones who walk down the road accosting drivers who are the problem"

I have been here many years now, and never once felt "accosted" by a street vendor. Maybe it is your attitude that provokes them?

I am sure we could find the police somthing a lot more important to focus on.Like jumping red lights, tail gating, wearing crash helmets, cue jumping, not to mention corruption.

You know what WOULD be cool?

Enforcing those rules for taxi drivers about taking people where they want to go and not parking on the pavements.
