Yingluck fronts up to rice plan critics

Abhisit pillories PM for sticking to script

The opposition singled out Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on the second day of the no-confidence debate yesterday.

Ms Yingluck was lambasted over alleged irregularities in the rice pledging scheme and flood response budget, and for failing to enforce anti-corruption laws.

The Democrat Party tried in vain to prevent other ministers from fielding questions on Ms Yingluck's behalf, particularly those concerning the controversial rice pledging scheme.

Insisting on the PM to reply for everything is not censure motion on the PM. The Opposition sat on these same benches before and fully well know how the system works, if the information was not updated it is not a big deal at all..!!

Agree in large part with SPICEMAN why AV lost the last elections I have ambivalent thoughts about this:

"when Govt interferes theprivate sector, loss of efficiency occurs"

The opposite is true too. Big business now manipulates government to intervene constantly on its behalf against worker organizations and rights in general. The free market economy is dead, and therefore a level playing field to go back to is impossible. Big business and gvmt are in cahoots now.

RR D17: I agree, the dems are throwing out anything to keep the PT on the defensive, because one day both AV and Suthep risk standing accused and convicted. Attack as defens

D4-'Look at the picture and you know who's winning and who's losing this debate'

Yes you are right. Yingluck looks like a deer caught in the headlights. Quite out of her depth.

Disc12 Ricefield "there are enough here who.... criticize them blindly."

Then step up to the plate... Name a successful Peua Thai policy. Just ONE successful policy - can it be that hard?

Rice? Fuel? Southern Insurgency? Cost of Living? Flood? Women's fund? Reconciliation? One million tablets? Any drug kingpins arrested?
Come on.... Sixteen months later, show me what they have done to deserve to keep their job. (Or will you continue to support them blindly?)

"This would push public debt past 60% of GDP, he said, which is unsustainable." - Abhisit, above

"The party is also offering a raft of populist spending policies, including a new universal education system, an extension of the low-cost universal health care scheme first implemented by Thaksin’s government, and other schemes targeting the rural poor. To finance those schemes, Korn said the Democrats will be willing to pump up public debt to between 55%-60% over the next five years." - Asia Times, Nov 3, 2007

The rice program is a perfect representation of something that doesnt benefit the country at all but only its Thaksin .Sacrifice the country so the selfish billionaire doesnt need to be accountable and can pick up where he left off .

Disc 16 - If the Opposition can't stop waffling in a debate then they have no chance in the real world either. In a non confidence debate it is the Opposition's job to bring relevant facts to light, not plots and not innuendo, and to pin down those in charge. They failed at this and finally resorted to personal attacks on YS and her family as they had nothing else left. At this point the opposition lost the debate, IMHO.

Khun BKposter #3, you're exactly correct to point out AV's hypocrisy. This is why he's been hopelessly outmaneuvered by PTP on every fronts and abandoned by PADs. The heart of the problem which is yet to be made by anyone lies within an economic reality. We all know that whenever the Govt interferes with theprivate sector, loss of efficiency occurs. The greater the interference, the grater is the loss, and when the usual widespread corruption is factored in, the loss become much bigger. This is why USSR, Eastern Blog countries, and Old China collapsed or why Greece, Spain, Portugal, and the US is collapsing. Is Thailand next?

D15@ggh - if you want to increase the price of rice on global markets then the only sustainable way is to affect the supply/demand balance. How does increasing the price encourage more demand (more people buying and eating rice) bearing in mind most of the consumers are not wealthy hisos? If rice farming is uneconomic then the answer is to help farmers to earn a living from alternative crops or professions etc. Supply reduces and prices rise for the remainder (and for all consumers). Setting a high pledging price has exactly the opposite effect - it has stimulated supply which will reduce price unless the rice is left to rot in warehouses
