Yingluck fronts up to rice plan critics

Abhisit pillories PM for sticking to script

The opposition singled out Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on the second day of the no-confidence debate yesterday.

Ms Yingluck was lambasted over alleged irregularities in the rice pledging scheme and flood response budget, and for failing to enforce anti-corruption laws.

The Democrat Party tried in vain to prevent other ministers from fielding questions on Ms Yingluck's behalf, particularly those concerning the controversial rice pledging scheme.

Disc 13 - I'm well aware that there are problems with this government, as there are with any government. The biggest problem is there is no longer a workable opposition, many here just can't see that. The Democrats throw out wild accusations on a daily basis but in the end people just dismiss this as politicking. Sometimes in politics you have to choose your fights and unfortunately the Democrats have not chosen wisely for 2 decades, IMHO.

BoontongTnay11: 'monitoring of the process' becomes difficult when the gov won't even give the amounts sold and were obviously caught in a barefaced lie regarding the g2g quantities between us and the Chinese. The result is to brush it under the table with more waffle. When this 'error' was highlighted at the debate, the defense put forward was 'there was a misunderstanding, let's move on to what we actually have'. Waffle !

How much did the Democrat’s price guarantee scheme cost the state and what did it do to increase the value of rice on the global market? I agree that the PT pledging scheme is risky. In most instances, benefits do not come without associated risks. If market prices can be increased over the long term, this will benefit not only farmers but the overall economic situation in Thailand. Unfortunately the tax payers will foot the bill in the short term. I have previously posted about wealth redistribution in Thailand. The goal of this program is to create a legitimate middle class in places other than BKK. This is only one small part of a

"I don't need to be critical of the government as there are enough here who, as you say, criticize them blindly."
I agree with you yet again. There are many people around who have a can do no right mindset towards the government. On the other hand there are people like you, who have the can do no wrong mindset.
When will people understand that is not about one or the other side winning but about Thailand and its people being the winners.

Disc 8- Did follow the debate and I didn't see much real evidence anywhere more innuendos and finger pointing than anything. I don't need to be critical of the government as there are enough here who, as you say, criticize them blindly.

Is it a censure debate or debate competition? Oppositions came with perceived, imaginary problems. These can be solved through monitoring of process and the use of existing laws. It is how you solve problems that determine if you can be a leader, in this case, the country. PM YS has adopted a leadership style that emphasize teamwork, delegation, consultative, and not confrontational. She is focusing on the economy to bring peace, prosperity and process through building foreign countries' confident in Thailand, create policy and environment on domestic consumption,'negotiating' to build a united Thai societies despite all the differences.

D4: When I look at the picture I see an undergraduate presenting his first power point with enthusiasm, and a grown up man who used to work on the top level of the BOI some time ago, in other words with experience in business, investment and markets, listening and having concerns.

Pity this forum becomes the usual tit for tat between pro and anti Govt opinions, it's pretty obvious that the rice pledging scheme is economically very risky and likely disastrous, so grilling the govt over it is important, & if they had any sense they might listen, otherwise they will be presiding over another '97' style financial crisis. It's time for the real Prime Minister to step up & give us answers, she's in charge (apparently), top economists point out that you will never sell rice on the open market for 40% more than usual, sustaining losses of 200 billion is quite likely & it's a great deal of money, mostly from the middle class.

Disc4 "Look at the picture and you know who's winning and who's losing this debate."

You are right the Dems will lose the debate, we knew that before it even started.
But instead of just looking at pictures you might actually watch the debate and take a good look at the evidence presented. It is good that you support the government but should you not be a bit critical too, instead of just following them blindly?
