#29 - You never cease to amuse - yes, as if the government is capable of doing that, even if they wanted to, which they clearly don't. According to the Pearson studies, and the scores they use, Thailand's education system ground to a halt in 2003 - amazing, the one thing that would actually reduce poverty, Thaksin & Co. seem to have sabotaged.

D30 - You are correct parents need to be proactive but what if the family working all the time to make ends meet? It's much easier if you are not poor.

D31 - Kids need teachers that grab their interest, make them want to discover things and make them ask why something is the way it is. Not to offend any teachers here but that's lacking in Thai schools where teachers just literally don't care about making their students excited about learning. Lots of reason for that as well.

Disc 19: you're correct in what you say, but the cause and reasons are totally different than what's behind the low rating in Thailand. In the USA the quality of education and instruction is good, it's the students lack of focused attention and and their failure to recognize the future importance of an education, primarily due to poor support at home and strong negative influences outside the classroom.

How about we all change? Everything needs to change for the better. How about us, the readers and commenters. Can we get to work on time? Can we spend 30 more minutes with our kids and help them with homework? Can we go out less? Can we watch less tv? Can we say no to boss, co-workers?
Can we cook one dish at home today instead of buying from outside? Can we just show our kids how to do things?

The biggest problem in Thailand is that there are two types of schools. Government schools and for profit schools. If Thailand wants to move ahead it need sweeping change by making decent public schools were anyone can go regardless of income levels and to stop funding for profits. I sent my kid to a Canadian public school - 19 students, 2 teachers plus he gets ESL all at no cost.

If the government refuses to do anything about education, people have to do it themselves. For some solutions check out "Failing Grades for Thai Education" via Alternative Thai News Network.

continuation from discussion no 24:he schools which are government funded -needs to be seen that if students have full access to all kind of sports -some schools dont have even playground !The food that served everyday during lunch are the poorest quality and hardly fills up the stomach ! I have seen in my own eyes -that no one can eat ! The director of the schools have to take action against bad teachers who use harsh ways to punish physically - use rude words and teach wrong !
This is my first hand experience !!But some teachers are great ! But they have no control on wrong and bad teachers and that has to be changed ! The teachers who thi
