The total education system has to be changed ! And it depends on the quality of a leader of a country ! The problem is 99 pct of the government officers and political leaders and ministers do not know how much they do not know !!!!!!!!!
It needs a total revolution in the Thai education system-
They have to have a system that will recruit quality teachers -not in terms of their degrees but in terms of their code of conduct - the way they look or treat students -if they are qualified enough to inspire students to learn rather than using sticks and foul words and disrespect for weaker students !
The schools which are government funded -needs

Disc 19: What does the United States have to do with this article, other than being an excuse for you to post a rather poorly thought out grammatical nightmare that seems to be a jab at OUR poor English skills? How does that foot taste?

The Ministry of Education has been well aware of the problems for ages. But, there's no will to change. That's the Thai way. Maintain the status quo at all costs.

They continually hire Western advisors and lecturers at the Ministry, and at the leading universities. I am one of them. But, I've learned that when one is asked for opinions about ways to improve things, they don't actually want to hear any suggestions, especially if they are in any way critical.

The revolving doors are constantly spinning with Farang exiting either out of frustration or more likely because they've been asked to leave because they've dared to speak out.

Congrats to the top 5 countries for achieving such ranking. S.Korea really impresses me also. It was only 40 some years ago that Korea was considered a 3rd World country.

Keep in mind that Thailand has been in an Educational Reform since 2001 (Thai Basic Education Curriculum 2544)if I'm not mistaken & has been updated in 2008?.

What have all the academics who studied abroad contribute so far?

Illiterate and uneducated, IMO, are two different points. Correct, most Thais can read and write. Comprehension, deduction and decision making are quite important as well. Where are they are in the scheme of things. Doesn't matter if the comparison is against 40 developed countries or not.

It is far worse in the USA, young Americans there cannot read, write or speak proper English instead speak low class slang !

Thailand purports to be a leader in Asia this survey says otherwise.A nation relies on well educated youngsters for its success. As a side line dare we ask how well the recently supplied computers are contributing to the success of the education in the country.

Why bother ? Centuries ago, the same happened in Europe. The elite kept the populace poor and the church kept them dumb. Europe needed a revolution to get rid of hem. Educated people asks questions, educated people are not easily fooled, educated people are a pain in the a** for many auhorities.

@discussion 6 - " many Thais cant read or write their name due to the terrible education system offered" Where did you get that idea? I cannot recall ever meeting a single illiterate Thai in the nearly 30 years I've lived and worked here, and that includes manual workers and market vendors. Under the old system, now regretfully abandoned, students had to pass a literacy test before they could even leave the 4th grade. Illiterate is one thing Thais are not.
