Private zoo hands big cats over to officials

A failed private zoo in Chai Nat province handed over nine tigers and two leopards to wildlife authorities yesterday.
Wasan Aimwuthikul, owner of Wat Singha Crocodile Farm, asked officials to pick up nine Bengal tigers and two leopards from the farm, said Theerapat Prayurasiddhi, deputy chief of the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department. Mr Theerapat said although tigers are protected animals under the law, the owner would not face charges because he had registered them. The department granted an amnesty to owners of protected wildlife who registered the animals with authorities in 2003.
Mr Wasan had planned to set up a tiger zoo, but the business did not go well and he decided to get rid of the animals.
