Dems demand proof Chinese rice deal exists

ENVOY THROWS DOUBT OVER AGREEMENT

The Democrat Party has demanded the government present documents to prove it has sealed a rice export deal with Beijing, after the Chinese ambassador to Thailand said the agreement had only been reached in principle.

The government has claimed it sold five million tonnes of pledged rice to China under a government-to-government (G-to-G) deal.

Democrat list MP Ong-art Klampaibul said the government must back its claims by producing copies of the G-to-G agreement contracts, customs export documents and receipts.

Disc 43 - "Opposition's job is to oppose by definition" You are correct on this but the Democrats appear to oppose everything the government does. Every part of every proposal by any government does not have to be opposed. Some are good, some are not so good. The opposition's job is to bring to the forefront those parts of government policy that could be improved. The Democrats while opposing don't unfortunately put forward anything as an alternative.

petrel d.25, "the Democrats intemperate opposition style" - Opposition's job is to oppose by definition. If anybody thinks the Thai Dems are in any way intemperate they should spend some time observing parliaments in some other democratic countries and learn how an opposition party should be doing its job - challenging and doing whatever is necessary to keep 'em honest.

By comparison these guys are wimps! And so is anybody who needs to complain about them as being "intemperate".

It is amazing how some hard core reds defending their party’s action even if it is obvious that something is not right; if nothing to hide why don’t give a proof and stop the opposition?

Ringmaster what has the rice deal where we talk about of billions of Thai Baht lost to do with Abhisit? If he dodged the draft and I say if than PT has the right to claim a rice deal which might not exists. What kind of logic is that?

ringmaster - "Can Abhisit produce documents that back his claims that he didn't dodge the draft?"

Why do you continue to use this tired old defense. Can't you actually say something that defends PTP instead of attacking someone else? Typical.

This is all a matter of semantics. China has said it has reached and agreement in principle with Thailand and the Chinese government had only assigned private companies to discuss rice purchases directly with Thai exporters.

In Thailand one side or the other is distorting the facts, most likely both sides are distorting the facts for political gain.

China rice imports head for record levels - Financial Times Nov 27, 2012 - "China the world’s second-largest rice importer"..."which grew 11 times over the same period last year"..."The USDA is forecasting 2012 Chinese rice imports to surge more than 4.5 times"...“This year China has been relying much more on the international market than in the past”.

For those of you who are not updated on this big gimmick played by the P.T government. The government has claimed that contracts for huge quantities of rice (exports) were signed with various governments. They will not disclose the contracts or their worth. From the Chinese government reply it is clear that the govt is lying, and very likely doing so about other contracts with other countries too. Take this to a legal route, the govt. will be forced to dislcose the facts to the court - that will reveal any fraud that is hidden.

Propaganda can be a wicked tool if used correctly.

I suppose if there was a major earthquake tomorrow or an invasion by space aliens, the red shirt defenders would immediately bring up Abhisit's allegedly dodging the draft.
