Govt vows to speed charter rewrite effort

CHALERM TIPS PROTEST FLARE-UP IN NEW YEAR

The Pheu Thai-led government will press ahead with its controversial charter amendment bid before the end of the year despite fears the move will expose it to fierce protests by anti-government groups.

NOT OUT: Gen Boonlert Kaewprasit is tipped to lead Pitak Siam again.

The government will "speed up" efforts to circumvent legal issues that have stalled the charter amendment bid from gaining House approval, Pheu Thai list-MP Korkaew Pikulthong said, adding that the issue would be raised when parliament resumes on Dec 21.

The Constitution Court suggested the government put the charter amendment to a public vote. They noted that the 2007 constitution was approved by popular referendum.

Despite the Yingluck Shinawatra government and its ally, the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, voicing objections to the 2007 charter,57.81% of voters were in favour of it while 42.19% were opposed.

So what reason is there to change it?

Why don't they focus on something like helping the economy? Reducing the debt? Enhancing the educational system? Stopping corruption? Jeez...just what we need. More fuel for political fights.

The PT government really needs to stop putting the personal needs of their convicted fugitive leader in self imposed exile ahead of the general well-being and progress of a whole country. Going through with this whitewash will be political suicide.
