Coalition backs vote on charter bill

The coalition parties' working group studying amendments to the 2007 constitution has agreed to go ahead with the vote in the third reading of the charter amendment bill still left undecided in parliament, group chairman Pokin Polakul said on Monday.

Mr Pokin said the agreement was reached at Monday's meeting of the working group.

It was agreed that it was the duty of parliament members to vote on the charter amendment bill in the third reading as required by the constitution.

Strangely, while visitors to this BP website seem to be overwhelmingly suspicious and cynical about this govt's motives and efforts to introduce a whitewash charter, today I'm seeing a reverse trend in like and dislike comments. There's a suspicious amount of dislikes against comments criticising the move, and it has me wondering if some silent effort isn't already underway to 'promote public support for the govt's agenda'. First 7 comments are all anti charter re-write, and all of them are uncharacteristically disliked 2-to-1!

I think the recent victory of YS over Pitak Siam protest has inadvertently emboldened her fugitive brother in Dubai, to begin plotting his return to Thailand "in style." However, the professional PADs are no amateur Pitak Siam, and if they could overthrow TS once back then, I don't see why they can't do it again now? I think they are well aware of the fact that TS' return only means their extinction. So, self-preservation must come first, or else!

Once again the personal needs of one man being put before the well-being of a whole country. The country is descending into anarchy just so that Thaksin can regain his illegally amassed loot and lost face.

of course the coalition parties will side with their masters,if the rewrite of the charter is voted in parliament,it would then have to eventually be given a public vote,where l think it requires a 75% majority which is wishful thinking as it also wants to whitewash previous crimes against the kingdom committed on a premediated period to suit some people

Further to proportional representation; 77 members, one from each province, therefore the charter committee will have 27 members representing 20 million people in Isarn who likely support the Peau Thai's tacitly endorsed candidates. The 10 million in Bangkok however get 1 member. Sounds fair to me! And this is the same lot who suggest the current charter is undemocratic because the senate isn't a full elected representation. Don't complain then when the Bangkok crowd take to the streets calling it illegitimate.

The key here is in the order of things. Constitutional court suggest a referendum on whether to amend the charter, Peua Thai are suggesting re-write the thing then put it to referendum. Chicken and egg. Are you entitled to go to the trouble of writing a new charter without first checking with the public whether they think it needs re-writing (as apposed to amending bits through regular parliamentary process.) Peau Thai aren't taking any chances in ramming this thing through according to their benefit. As it stands their proposal for a drafting committee is anything but proportional democratic representation.
