Thais tolerant of violence between sexes, seminar told

Gender violence is part of a culture of "silent acceptance" and Thais are urged to stop keeping quiet about the gender issue so society can bring about changes, a seminar was told.

The Media Monitor Project, a non-governmental media watchdog group, and the Women's Health Advocacy Foundation, yesterday presented a study on the media, gender violence and gender discrimination at a meeting, attended by academics and journalists.

Kritaya Archavanitkul, an academic of Mahidol University's Institute for Population and Social Research, said the gender issue has been regarded as indecent by Thai society and is not a topic for open discussion, which leads to gender bias.
