Abhisit, Suthep opt to stand trial in court

Democrat Party leader and former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Friday that he will report to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) on Dec 13 to acknowledge the charge a charge of murder relating to the 2010 protests and was ready to prove his innocence in court.

He said this after accepting the department’s letter calling him in to acknowledge charges of authorising the killing of anti-government protesters by soldiers during the April-May 2010 violence in Bangkok.

Sorry to sound rude, but what is 97 dead people compared to 2500 under Thaksin's war on drugs...and if the amount does not matter, than how about somchai and his police handling the protests in October 2008?

Orange, D22, you mean the mountain of evidence for those 2500 drugs war deaths?

Rather than messing about with ridiculous prosecutions under the Criminal code why not simply bring a case which addresses the core issues, which in lay man's terms seem to be: 1st were CRES actions within the authority granted by the Emergency decree and the laws of Thailand? 2nd if yes, were they justified in the circumstances which they faced and did CRES exhaust all less drastic options first? 3rd having chosen to deploy the army did the rules of engagement issued to the army take all reasonable steps to prevent or minimise injury and loss of life? Until we have such a case there will never be closure on either side

The conspiracy theory is an insult to people's intelligence. It doesn't require a far stretched imagination to understand that there's a mountain of evidence and case to be answered, not least in the interest of the general public and crime victims seeking fairness, not revenge.

Well, people did die and accountability must be taken. Will AV and Suthep spend time in jail? We can only speculate .

If Thaksin is so interested in the court maybe he could go as well .His charges predate the riot he funded .Maybe he is better at hiding .

Re: D9 As far as I am aware of the events of last week, no one was firing AK-47's or M-79 grenades from behind a three meter high gasoline soaked barricade or trying to set fire to gas trucks on Asoke Road. Naivete is not an admirable trait.

'He insisted that there would be no negotiations for his own benefit, even though under the charges he could be sentenced to death'.

A man unlike the sly, manipulative fugitive.

Seems Thaksin/PTP are not going to pursue the ICC route. Why ? An impartial investigation would reveal his role and responsibility for the mayhem, arson and deaths.

    Disc. 9
Simply because on the day the police failed to their job. The military attempted to clear the streets of violent redshirt mobs, but came under fire. Tear gas is no much use against grenades and live rounds!

"The question remains is why the Army did not take the same action as the police did last week and use tear gas and not live bullets for crowd control?"

Well, it might have something to do with the fact that the reds were armed and dangerous and as well had stock-piled enough gasoline to burn the city down.

One thing is for sure. Abhisit has got guts, which is more than can be said for the petulant little cry-baby hiding in Dubai. This will backfire on the PTP as Abhisit comes out of this unscathed and much elevated.
