One correctional officer has been hurt at the Chiang Mai Central prison while breaking up a fight involving 25 inmates. There was no report of any serious injury.
Piroon Norkeaw, the prison chief, called police on Saturday to report a fight between two groups of inmates in which bed sheets were set on fire and missiles thrown. He then ordered all prisoners to return to their cells immediately.
The Chang Puek police station and emergency workers were contacted to help stop the brawl. It took them more than 40 minutes to eventually contain the situation. One officer was hit in his face with a rock. Five inmates were also injured; one of them sustained a head wound while others only suffered some bruises.
