Thaksin: Referendum before charter rewrite

The government should first hold a referendum to gauge people's opinions on amendments to the constitution, before going ahead with the changes, former premier Thaksin Shinawatra said on Tuesday in a speech to the Asia Society in Hong Kong.

"The government is ready to accept the result of the referendum, and whether there will be enough votes is not a worrying issue," Thaksin said.

For someone who keeps assuring anyone that is still listening that he is no longer involved
in politics, Thaksin sure has a lot to say and a lot of control.

Thaksin's saying that a referendum is necessary will shut all his political opponents' mouths up.

The Pheu Thai has lost most of my support since the elections and their backtracking. The reconciliation bill is farce and should be put on the back burner, at least until Abhisit and Suthep have had their day in court.

And Taksin should stay out of politics and keep his mouth shut. The more he interferes and makes himself "unforgettable" the more fuel he adds to the fire.

"Reconciliation an amnesty to return home, because I'm familiar with staying abroad," he said.

Ok, decode this" Does "familiar with staying abroad" mean

    (A) " I don't care if I come back" or is it more like

    (B) " I can come back any time if I wanted to but I don't so there"

I remember him saying recently he had a "cool" way to return-is this it ?

I thought he would tell his sister to fix the Deep South first, as people continue to be murdered by the thousands on a daily basis, especially, teachers!

I agree with Thaksin in this case, but we must carefully review the words in the plebiscite before voting.

Thaksin's advice is in line with the Constitutional Court's very conservative ruling on the charter amendment bill. The PM has rightly recommended that the matter should be decided in and by Parliament. A referendum to endorse the Government's proposal to set up a charter rewrite committee does offer a pragmatic solution to the current impasse.
