DSI chief defends murder charge

Department of Special Investigation chief Tarit Pengdith on Friday defended the DSI's decision to lay murder charges against former premier Abhisit Vejjajiva and his former deputy Suthep Thaugsuban in connection with the 2010 military crackdown on red-shirt protests.

Abhisit Vejjajiva arrives at the Department of Special Investigation office Thursday afternoon amid tight police security. The former prime minister and his former deputy Suthep Thaugsuban have been charged with murder by the DSI. (Photo by Tawatchai Kemgumnerd)

He also set up an inquiry to find out who was responsible for leaking a photograph that showed Mr Abhisit being fingerprinted on Thursday in a supposedly closed room.

    Disc54 Eric - Wrong.
Weapons WERE found at the temple (there was a photograph showing all the weapons - which UDD cropped to cut out all the firearms and grenades).
Reports from people inside the temple confirm that MiBs fired at soldiers from inside the temple.
An international journalist wrote that there was an EXCHANGE of fire between men in the temple and soldiers.
And the Reuters cameraman? An accident in the chaos. But of course, if the UDD hadn't brought weapons to Bangkok, no-one would have died, would they? Would they? Hello?

D54 : Reporters know the risks involved in mingling with violent and armed protesters and they gladly take them. Otherwise, they wouldn't have entered a declared live-fire-zone.
Except for the innocent nurse, the others could easily have been armed and have had their weapons removed by other red shirted terrorists after the shootings as the security-forces didn't enter the temple.

#50 Bob, if you insinuate the Gvt uses the justice in a political game against Abhisit maybe can you also think that the cases against Thaksin were (are) also ""politically motivated".

    Wakeup Discussion 51

It was a mass demonstration and brutal crackdown on protestors, there is no other way to accurately describe the overall course of events. Unfortunate but true, Mr Abhisit failed in negotiating a peaceful end to the demonstration and is now facing a murder charge.

Wakeup dis#51, how would you explain the killings in Wat Prathum temple which has been declared a safe zone and there were only refugees? What about the killings of the Reuters cameraman. He was not armed.

Answer 48 : To be accurate and credible, do you mind to give us exact names, references, date and articles where "the international medias and governments worldwide are at a loss to understand what is going on in Thailand. Thailand's reputation on the international stage is getting worse and worse" ?
Because at least 2 majors world known Human Right Organizations (Human Right Watch on May 2012 and Amnesty International just next to May 2010) have called officials during 2010 to be held accountable in front of the law. So please now give us your reference about "international medias and government worldwide" who are supposed to condemn it.

#42, Crunchy : "the criminal court gave order to PM AV to end the protest". Are you sure the criminal Court can give such an order to the executive? In fact all the arguments are good to decline the responsibility of the killing. By an other way... We learn 1)that the soldiers and snipers fired in defense. But no one protester, medic, reporter hurted or killed was armed. 2) that the soldiers and snipers fired against armed people (MIB) but no one of this armed people was hurted or killed. So. at least, the justice have to know what orders were done and who did what.

#46 What should a leader do when confronted with heavily armed terrorists in the streets of a nation's capital city? Do you think it is really fair to call men armed with M-16s, Ak-47s, M-79s, and other implements of war "protesters?" This not according to Abhisit, this according to HRW's report "Descent into Chaos (page 62)."

  • Discussion 50 : 14 Dec 2012 at 14.4750

Nobody seriously believes this is a real case (except perhaps Android).
It's simply a bargaining chip arranged by PT to pressure the opposition.
There are no humanitarian/democratic principles at work here - simply a greedy, corrupt man trying to avoid justice.
The blame for ALL the deaths in 2010 can be laid at the feet of the people who brought armed insurgents to the capital city and murdered soldiers and civilians.

This will all backfire on DSI boss Tarit ( false accusation is a criminal offence ) , UDD and the PT Party and its boss. This desperate move shows that the boss abroad is getting nervous. Especially all the corruption will slowly open up now and master minds and shareholder of Chinese firms and so on will be revealed soon.
