Coalition backs referendum plan

The coalition partners in the Pheu Thai-led government on Friday afternoon issued a statement supporting the proposal for a national referendum on constitutional amendment.

The four political parties met at SC Park hotel in Bangkok.

A statement of support for a referendum was read out after the meeting by Interior Minister and Pheu Thai leader Charupong Ruangsuwan.

What happens when the required majority of voters support the charter change? What will that trigger from the Amart, PAD, Military and Democrat Party? All will state they will support the outcome but then, after the result, will come the multitude of allegations of vote buying, interference, intimidation and media bias! What will the military do this time? Unfortunately in Thailand, Thais cannot be neutral, they have a side whether they publicise it or not. For foreigners living here - you can only try to be or be seen to be neutral. We can only hope this referendum may be the catalyst that commences the long road to democractic maturity.

D3 : You don't have to guess. Several UDD leaders have already said they would not accept anything but a full rewrite of the Constitution.

am l right, in a national referandum to change or rewrite a charter you have to have a 75% majority of the people consent ? the only change to the previous charter 2007 was added by consent was to get easier access to remove a pm who was abusing his powers,as the previous pm was caught by didnt step down ,other than that amendment, the charter was written some time ago and was thoroughly debated and good for all,why does the fugitive wanr ro change it,its base on thai law

In fact the people should have the right to vote on this issue just as they elect politicians. This mandate from the voters would have to be accepted and respected by everyone with no exceptions. My guess is there will be those that will not accept even the peoples wishes.

I am agree that good idea to involve all people of Thailand, because it is our country, and better than the way the one we have now was created.

The coalition parties backs anything the PTP and their self-exiled crime-master puts on the table. Thats what they got their lucrative positions for.
No one actually thought they were there to serve the country and the people?
