Poll: Thaksin TV stunt wrong

The appearance of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra on a televised boxing broadcast last Sunday was inappropriate, say 36.7% of people questioned in a new poll.

Another 13.9% of respondents had no problem with the appearance, saying it was the right of those who bought airtime from state-owned NBT. The rest had no opinion, said pollsters from the National Institute of Development Administration (Nida).

Nida interviewed 1,270 people randomly selected throughout the country on Thursday and Friday for their views on Thaksin's appearance on NBT (Channel 11) during the live broadcast of the Muay Thai Warriors event from Macau on Dec 9.

50% do not dare to express any opinion against Thaksin.

Bob d.1, It's not always black or white. There could be many reasons people don't give an opinion. It says a lot that the % was so high.

Maybe a lot of people couldn't give a monkey's fart about Thaksin.

If the question was only couched in the language of for or against Thaksin etc etc etc, I would have no opinion either because I couldn't care less whether he appeared on tv, on the moon or anywhere else for that matter.

36.7% of pollsters said the broadcast was inappropriate, while the rest 63.3% raised no objection to such. So majority of the respondents have no objection to the televised broadcast. This is a simple interpretation.

It's more likely a malaise with Thai politics.

I wonder what the voter turn-out would be if voting weren't compulsory. My feeling is the average Thai is more interested in lao khao, lakkorn, karaoke and gambling.

Seems to me that the Headline glaringly does not accurately reflect the poll results reported in the body of the story, so it is no coincidence that the part of the pool probably most accurate is that only 14% consider that the press is ethical. I think it is a growing problem not only in Thailand but worldwide that the press is becoming more and more unethical and willing to spin the news to their own political slant by ignoring what does not favor their position and only focus on what does.

The 50% are probably Thaksin supporters of one form or other who didn't want to admit their icon made a grave mistake. Very few people ever admit to mistakes in Thailand. The classic Thai answer, "mai roo" (I don't know).

Either they are “with us, here” or “with him, there”; no fence sitters, oblivious to the situations affecting their livelihood. It’s time the silence majority let their collective voices be heard. Which ever ways we looked at this situation, it’s not an appropriate time / arena to voice this political diatribe, ostensibly in honor of our beloved King. It was done in bad form / taste, designed to score some cheap political points which inadvertently showed his true character and poor judgment. Long Live the King !!!

Discussion 1: Actually, the same results were announced on Channel 3.

Indeed, around 50% had no opinion, which is very noteworthy. How could they not have an opinion? Is it because of the lack of critical thinking in Thais, which people often comment about? Of course it was the wrong thing for Channel 11 to allow and for Thaksin's cousin to organize, but then politicians lack a sense of morality and ethics, and they use TV channels in ways in which they shouldn't.
