B30m in fake cosmetics seized

PATHUM THANI: The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) on Monday seized more than 30,000 items of fake cosmetics worth an estimated 30 million baht.

Police arrested Somoh Goonsongkram for licence infringement and selling fake cosmetic products.

Investigators said the man told them he sold his merchandise through two websites, www.bevershop.com and www.sumpang.com. The sites reportedly had a combined 4-5 million browsers. Products were delivered to buyers by mail.

@Disc 3 - I beg to differ. Brand name cosmetics are sold to distributors at 30-40% retail value, with perfume standing at around 50% depending on brand. These should be pretty accurate as a friend runs a duty free in South America. Average retail goods, the general rule is divide by 3-4 to get the costs that distributors buy it for.

Brand name cosmetics are sold to big distributors for about 10% of the retail value. That means if someone pays in a department store 1,000B i.e. for perfume this perfume was sold from the manufacturer for 100B. With these margins it is no surprise that some people produce and sell cheaper products. If the cosmetic industry wants that people buy their products then they should start selling them at a reasonable price. Multimillion dollar advertisement campaigns don’t make the products any better, just more expensive.

Websites do not have 4-5 million browsers. They may have had 4-5 million page views over a period of time, but not 4-5 million browsers.

Some cosmetic products applied to the skin or inhaled, fake or not, can be harmful to one's health.
