Mines near Preah Vihear to be cleared

Thailand, Cambodia agree on joint mission

The Thai-Cambodian Joint Working Group has agreed to clear all landmines from the demilitarised zone around Preah Vihear temple, Supreme Commander Tanasak Patimapragorn said yesterday.

Tanasak: ‘Area will be mine-free by April’

The agreement was reached at this week's JWG meeting at the Rama Gardens Hotel in Bangkok.

    When I visited Preah Vihear 10 years ago, demining was going on at that time. The odd thing was that a workman was cutting down the long grass with a strimmer whilst a protected soldier was following looking for the mines with a detector. I wonder how much the grass cutter was paid.
