Experts voice concern despite migration deal

Labour advocates and academics have told a seminar that many pressing issues need to be addressed before the Thai-Myanmar migration situation can be effectively tackled.

Supang Chantavanich, director of Chulalongkorn University's Asian Research Centre, expressed optimism about a new legal channel for importing labour under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which Thailand has signed with neighbouring countries.

"The new system [under the MoU] should help provide health coverage and welfare for migrant workers under a more flexible framework, as well as keep their profiles updated better than the current system," Ms Supang told the seminar, which was held at Chulalongkorn University.
