Gangs hire villagers to launder illicit cash

Amlo wants 'cleaning day' for fake accounts

The Anti-Money Laundering Office (Amlo) yesterday voiced alarm over a rise in the number of suspicious bank accounts being opened for money laundering.

Many villagers in the North have been hired to open accounts for illicit businesses, it said.

Amlo secretary-general Sihanart Prayoonrat addressed the issue at a forum in Ayutthaya yesterday aimed at educating civil network groups about a new anti-money laundering act and an anti-terrorism financing act.
