Floods, drought top disaster warning list

Heavy floods, storms and droughts top the list of natural disasters that will pose critical economic and social losses to global communities in the future, academics say.

Thanawat Jarupongsakul, head of the Unit for Disaster and Land Information Studies at Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Science, said the three key natural disasters are closely linked to climate change.

From 1980-2010, the number of heavy floods, storms and droughts increased dramatically, while the number of earthquake disasters has remained stable.

Well, with China planning to build another 50 dams worldwide, it's man-made threats that are the real and present danger. With Myanmar and Laos planning to become regional energy hubs, Thailand's fate is far from secure; dams worldwide cause a drop in sea level (by a minuscule amount) but also the ground to sink, so Thailand's position is less than ideal. More droughts and flash-floods is a good prediction based alone on China's actions.

"seems like this discussion has been started by a couple of Climate Change Deniers"
    Disc 4

Wow. That's quite an extrapolation based on a complete misreading of both comments.

I was merely making a joke about such doom and gloom on Christmas Day.

With the news that the Greenland and Antarctica ice shelves are melting at a pace faster than climate scientists predicted, and Bangkok being situated on a river delta, the danger is real, especially as the worlds 2 greatest CO2 emiters (China and the US), refuse to take the problem seriously.

I don't worry so much about the natural disasters.
It is more the man-made disasters that scare me.
