Canal boat fee collector drowns

A female boat fee collector drowned when she fell into the Saen Saeb canal in the Bang Kapi area of Huay Khwang district after hitting her head on the starboard side of the vessel.

Police reported that the body of Kamolpan Pha-attarat, 30, was recovered from the canal at almost midnight on Monday. Apparently, she tripped and slammed her head on the side of the boat before falling into the river unconscious near Witthaya Wijitra school pier.

    Most fee collectors are female, and they have to walk around the boat on the outer rim to get to the passengers, with one hand holding the fare box. Quite a risky job indeed, especially when the boat is overloaded.

    They don't wear life jackets, so she could have disappeared below the water. It should be mandatory for them to at least wear floatable waist belts which wouldn't be in the way or very uncomfortable
