City air tipped to take drastic turn for worse

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment's Pollution Control Department predicts that the quality of air in Bangkok next year will deteriorate significantly due to a dramatic increase in the number of private cars in the city.

The prediction is based on the department's 2011 survey of the level of benzene detected by four air quality measurement stations in the Din Daeng, Pathumwan, Wang Thonglang and Thon Buri areas.

The survey found the level of benzene in the capital's air last year remained well above the safe air quality standard of 1.7 milligrammes per cubic metre.

@discussion 3 - All sensible proposals, which is why they will never be done by the government here.

Enforce a series of " No motorized vehicles allowed " in the busiest sections of BKK, put up more bike stations/marked bike lanes, and offer incentives for their use, finance free shuttle busses to/from exterior BKK free parking lots so can "park and go ", one lane on every highway exclusively for use of vehicles bearing more than one person, open 1 extra lane, each direction to speed up traffic flow during busiest AM and PM traffic hours. These and some of about a hundred other traffic lessening solutions have been effectively used in the other world.

They seem to be on a suicide wish, learn from other nations mistakes. Why do Thais need to reinvent the wheel. You may have helped the GDP with the tax relief by selling more vehicles however when other countries are trying to cut down on traffic this has not helped nor will it help ease congestion.

If they belch black or white smoke, ban them from the roads.
