Somsak sees end to strife in New Year

Parliament president calls for simultaneous public hearings, referendum

Holding a public referendum on constitutional amendments in parallel with public hearings would be the best way to end the charter conflict, Parliament President Somsak Kiatsuranont has said.

The government has tried to bow to the opposition party's demands by holding a referendum to find out if the public agrees with a plan to rewrite the constitution entirely, he said.

The referendum plan and the offer of hearings gave him reason to hope the political climate will improve next year, he said.

"Besides, the country's biggest problem is wandering the Dubai desert." Would that he were wandering the desert. He is living a life of luxury the ordinary Thai can only dream off.

Tell the public what you want to change in the constitution and why it will benefit them. In other words tell the truth.

The strife will end when the one in Dubai wants it to end. Not sooner.

If Peua Thai didn't have an agenda driven goal in amending the charter there would probably be nothing for them to internally argue about. Ask the people, without cajouling them, end of story. And I don't buy into this rubbish that they are only following through on an election pledge. Less than 50% of the voters supported their policy platform, so reverse logic implies charter change is not wanted. Besides, you can't lump together a bunch of unrealistic, self-serving policies and then claim an election victory mandates the lot, it was an exercise in choosing the best of a bad bunch, not endorsing one man's comeback strategy.

End of strife? If the referendum is a resounding no to changes in the Constitution, proxy PM Poo has said she'd go ahead with the changes anyway. In that case,we won't see an end to strife and it is pointless to waste 2 billion on a referendum,if the vote is not heeded by the unusually wealthy elitist Chiang Mai family. Besides, the country's biggest problem is wandering the Dubai desert.
