Cabbies say 'no' to service refusal

More than 2,000 taxi drivers in Bangkok have pledged not to refuse service to passengers by choosing who to take or where to go.

The drivers made their promise on Tuesday as part of a campaign called “Taxi Jai Dee” (jai dee in Thai means kind, good hearted) initiated by the Royal Thai Police.

The campaign, which started Tuesday and will finish at the end of the 2014 New Year holiday week, was launched at Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak) where deputy national police chief Ruangsak Jaritek signed a commitment with Julie Sawangarun, president of Taxi Thai, Hua Jai Inter Club, representatives from the Taxi Drivers Association of Thailand and Wutthichart Kalayanamitr, managing director of The Transport Co.

These obviously were not the taxi drivers I encountered trying to get home from Sukhumwit after NY Eve. I was repeatedly turned down when I wanted them to go to a residential area. The drivers only wanted to stay around Sukhumwit and ferry tourists to their hotels. I had to walk north about 2 km before I flagged down a young driver wearing an army cap. He took me home with no argument and cheerful service. I tipped him 100 baht, as I usually do for NY Eve.

A lot of times I rode in a taxi from mochit to saburnabhumi airport and vice versa and the taxi drivers asked me to pay 700 baht. They refused if you will not yield on their demand. This story needs to be seen. I will refused to beleive untill I will experience a raxi jai deein Thailand.

Perhaps a bit more competition, more taxis, would help?

Why shouldn't taxis have the right to refuse a contract with a potential customer, for whatever reason? Everyone else refuses service for various reasons that matter to them - try waltzing in to a hi-so restaurant in shorts and singlet and see how you go.

I'll believe this when I see it. Does that also mean all taxis will now always use the meter, including the vultures around the airport, hotels and tourist spots?

Was in Bangkok in October and again in November and about 1/2 of the taxis refused to take us where we wanted to go.
