Obec revives smart-card student plan

The Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) has revived an idea to distribute smart cards to students to purchase school uniforms and learning materials, replacing the present system of offering cash.
Chinnapat Bhumirat, Obec's secretary-general, said the idea will be put to Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Phongthep Thepkanchana this week.
If approved, the smart card issued by the Government Savings Bank would be handed to all students from Prathom 1 to Mathayom 6 levels _ about 7.8 million students _ in the 2013 academic year.
