Defence Minister ACM Sukumpol Suwanatat yesterday signed an order formally revoking former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's military appointments for draft dodging.

Under the order, the Defence Ministry's order appointing Mr Abhisit as an instructor at the Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy in 1987, and another order making him a commissioned officer in 1988, are revoked. A ministry source said the order had been sent to Mr Abhisit's home for him to acknowledge.

ACM Sukumpol earlier said his order to revoke Mr Abhisit's military service would have no bearing on his rank of sub-lieutenant because taking away a rank requires royal endorsement. In another development, Mr Abhisit, who is the Democrat Party leader, said Chartthaipattana chief adviser Banharn Silpa-archa's offer to spearhead national reconciliation efforts can only succeed if he puts justice before reconciliation.
