Pracha wants 100 new warders

Inmates are taking over prisons, department says

The Justice Ministry is seeking to deploy more corrections officers in the wake of the hostage drama at Khao Bin prison in Ratchaburi which left a prison guard dead.

A prison warder was killed after being taken hostage at knifepoint by three inmates on Sunday. Two of the inmates were killed by authorities and the other surrendered.

The Corrections Department says a shortage of prison guards is leading to more frequent attacks at prisons.

"One warder for every 3000 inmates".
This is out of all adequate range. How can prisons carry out programmes of rehabilitation with such a ratio. Control of prisons by sporadic brutality is not a substitute for humane supervision by an adequate number of trained prison staff.
