Politically tinged drama taken off air

Channel 3's primetime soap opera "Nua Mek 2" has abruptly been taken off the air on Friday, citing "inappropriate" content, and many reckon that the ban is "politically motivated".

The storyline of Nua Mek 2 (Beyond the Clouds or Beyond Comparison) above the cloud (literal Thai translation), focuses on a corrupt politician keen on profiteering on a satellite launch and a sorcerer who performs black magic to manipulate politics.

The series, produced by Chatchai Plengpanich, who also acted as the sorcerer, and directed by Nonzee Nimibutr, was on air since Dec 14, and was cut short before airing its final episode on Friday night.

The show should be billed as a reality show rather than a soap opera as it is a good representation of the way many Thais behave, in particular politicians and police.

I agree with others, any smart person now would either download it to Youtube, or copy it to DVD (with english subs) and sell at Pantip and other street locations, there's a possible fortune to be made, especially the viewers who have been watching it and now deprived of seeing the outcome..We missed it! Will have to steal the remote away from the wife in future!!

I agree with you, given the reputation of present Thai politicians it was like a real show and this is why many from Thailand and especially from elsewhere felt touched and were not satisfied with the said drama.

Oh great, another new romantic drama Rang Prathana. Let me guess - lady want man, man no see, lady cry, some other woman villan plotting angry, make lay cry. Lots of actors looking, no speak with ominous music, interspersed with lots of light piano!

See the good side. This could be the first time a Thai soap opera makes Thai people think.

@ploydonut...D1: Yes, protect the country from soap operas all together.

The politicians may be the only people in Thailand who don't know this, but their reputation as people of integrity was blown out of the water many decades ago. Is there an adult in Thailand who does not know the characteristics and motives of politicians? Censoring a Thai play will merely reinforce their reputation. I seriously wonder if this Forum will be available for much longer.

What kind of democracy is this? Why can't we even watch a form of performing arts on television? After all it is only a fictional television play, why is this government so uptight? Is this television play too close to reality for this government?
