NGV bus purchase 'too expensive'

The Transport Ministry's plan to purchase 3,183 natural gas-fuelled public buses for more than 13 billion baht is too costly, appointed senator Paibul Nititawan said on Monday.

The ministry will seek approval for the procurement of the 3,183 NGV-fuelled buses at the cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

In terms of costs...it should also consider about the durability and efficiency...we have had buses running in Bkk and could judge and evaluate which ones are the best and cost efficient. what's the use of having a 3m bus and has to dump off in a year compared to a bus which cost 4m but still running smoothly after four or five years. Most importantly there should be no secrets like G2G deals as the rice pledging policy. Everything should be transparent.

I agree with the senator. Prices quoted on the Internet are in the order of 2 million Baht per unit. With the large number of vehicles being purchased, there should also be room for further price rebates.

Some people don't mind paying for the best. Cheap isn't always the answer. The price of quality in engineering can save you lots in maintainance. Also the price of replacement parts must be concidered. NGV vehicles would help the quality of the air you breath. However, buying all the same makes is a huge consideration just as Discussion 2 points out.

Re Discussion 3. If there are 2 cars exactly the same but selling at different prices; 3 million and 4 million. I would rather buy it for 3 million rather than 4 million...

Just wait for the criticism when maintenance costs increase because of the multitude of spare parts and training and retention of staff that will be necessary if numerous companies win the bids. Just by having 10 procurement contracts does not guarantee transparency. Transparency can be achieved, along with greater negotiating leverage, if one company wins the bid, as long as the process is open and fair, and subject to independent scrutiny.
