Poll: Politics ‘Thailand’s big problem’

Thailand has fared well in a poll of foreign travellers asked about their favourite investment destination, with political conflict and corruption cited as the kingdom's weak points, Abac Poll reported on Wednesday.

The Public Policy for Asean Affairs Research Centre at Abac Poll of Assumption University interviewed 958 foreigners travelling to countries in Asean from Dec 10 to Jan 8, asking for their views on Thailand’s strong and weak points and the investment climate in Asean.

The samples were required to have knowledge and understanding about Thailand and at least five other countries in Asean.

I don't know if I should be pleased with this poll. One particular question about access to raw materials, what does raw materials mean in this poll? I would have had the problem answer this question. The first thing come to mind is "YaBa" access to Yaba that may be easiest in Thailand.

If the BP insists on publishing results of polls please also publish (in English) the questionnaire sheets used. It is impossible to interpret the results unless we can see how the questions were phrased and what options were given to the interviewees.

And the people being interviewed for the ABAC poll were currently in what country when they were being asked the questions....Thailand perhaps?? Maybe that influenced the response - just a thought.

“The samples were required to have knowledge and understanding about Thailand and at least other five countries in the Asean”.

“Of total respondents, 40.6% were Asian, 37.1% European, 5.8% American, 5.3% Australian and the remaining 11.2% were other nationalities”.

Hardly a fair poll as it is so biased towards Thailand. To have a knowledge and understanding of six out of ten Asean countries, it must have taken a few weeks to find the 958 respondents.

What a joke. A poll conducted by a Thai university among investors currently in Thailand discovered that those investors favored Thailand more than other nations. A more unscientific poll would be hard to concoct. The flimsy "requirement" that the investors surveyed needed "familiarity" with other ASEAN nations is just silly. Obviously investors who are in Thailand show a greater leaning towards investing in Thailand. I assure you there are thousands of investors who long ago concluded that Thailand was no longer economically viable or business friendly. You're not likely to meet those investors in Thailand. Try polling elsewhere.

As with most of these so-called 'public opinion Polls', it is questionable if they in fact reflect public opinion, or are just a projection of Opposition agenda's.

As in this case, it is in the interest of the Opposition to suggest that there is a problem with politics in Thailand.

The fact they cannot win elections is not a political problem for Thailand, but for them.

How on earth did Thailand score higher than Malaysia and Singapore on a lot of these questions? This is a stupid poll and really just reflects on how much the person asked likes the country.
Polls like this are dangerous because it leaves the false impression that the country doesn't need much improvement.

Politics has been Thailands problem for the last 50 years and is in no way going to take any time soon
