School children welcome the opportunity to let their hair down

Schoolboys and girls have welcomed the education minister's order to all schools to abolish strict limits on the length of students' hair.

Phongthep Thepkanchana issued the order on Wednesday after receiving a number of complaints from students who complained they are punished in school for having long hair.

Their schools, however, say the length of their hair violates a 1972 ministerial regulation.

"Mr Alongkorn said the 1972 ministerial regulation is a good rule because the crew cuts make students look tidy and differentiates them from adults."
And there we see the reason why the institutions of Thailand are massive failures. They cannot see beyond surface appearance and shun through fear the ever changing reality of our modern world...........

Isn't it great that the ED Minister did something worthwhile?? If only he would institute good education in Thailand for the lower & middle classes who cannot afford private schools, but we all know that is unlikely.

i thought the rule of hair length in school in thailand had long been abolished but i just found out today that the education minister just woke up. What can i say?" better late than never".During my 6 school-years in thailand in 1980s ,the topic then had already raised protests and disagreement from many students at school but their voices had been ignored and some even got punished unfairly just because they tried to argue logically with the school authority. They never wanted to defy any reasonable rules but the limit length nor style of their hair have nothing to do with intelligence and capacity. Worse, they looked the same like robots..

Now it is the time to get to the core of the problem in education which is education itself, not the length of the hair or the uniforms kids distest. If Thailand can't make it to the top ten in education atleast move it up to pass the bottom ten that the way to start. good luck and don't sweatover small things like the length of the hair.

I have long marveled at such a stupid and unnecessary law. It is all about control, nothing else.
