Mum sells child bride for B2,000

LOP BURI – A mother forced her 13-year-old daughter to marry a 34-year-old man who paid a bride price of 2,000 baht, The Pavena Foundation for Women and Children (Pavena) reported on Friday.

The girl told foundation staff that the man had come over for a drink with her parents at her home on Tuesday. He later entered her room and hugged her while she was sleeping. He fled after she screamed for help.

The following day, the man came into her room again and forced her to have sex with him. When she told her parents, they asked the man to come over and then offered her as his bride for 2,000 baht.

Rape is what we call it. Accepting money is living off the avails of prostitution. Also endangering the welfare of a minor. Both parents and the rapist should be in jail right now. This is a horrible crime against this young girl.

PATCHAR I agree, people have been bamboozled into thinking statistics and shareholders define the economy. They fail to see there are millions of people eking out a living in a sort of parallel world.

And yes, much of crime is poverty related. For every thousand cops on the beat chasing after petty criminals, how many are investigating white collar crime, high up cops and politicians and other people at the top of society who hide their crimes?

D9 You should educate yourself before you comment. BP has run numerous articles in the past months outlining the decline of Thailand. 37th worst education system, growing higher on the corruption list, human rights watch list, you name it. Do you understand outside of Bangkok and the tourists areas how uneducated Thai people really are? Selling child brides for money is not right in any case whether it was practiced or not. 2,000 baht? My God man, you couldn't do anything with that small money that a child's entire life is being sacrificed for. In America we call these people pedophiles and not it is not normal or common. There is no excuse!

Thailand has no ethical and moral values whatsoever. Full stop. It is not even a Buddhist country too as the Thais cherish money above all. Full stop.

Just the tip of the iceberg,I'm afraid.

D9,No one in Thailand is so poor that they need to sell their children to get food on the table. And while I'm at it,try not to use "practice in said village was not uncommon" as an excuse for this disgusting form of rape of children.

Drsmith D7 your comments are usually pretty accurate and worthwhile, however saying a country and its people are all backwards isn't fair or accurate really.
While I am obviously disgusted at the situation and how the child was treated, you must understand that poor people will do almost anything to get money to feed themselves, and apparently in said village this practice was not uncommon.
I am impressed that the authorities are involved now and that the victim is being helped. Maybe it will deter others, i hope it will

Pavena Hongsakul is a saint. If Thailand had many more like her willing to do their jobs at any cost, 98% of the problems in Thailand would disappear. I applaud her efforts and the work she is doing. Child brides in modern day Thailand show just how backwards and uneducated this country really is. Thailand should be ashamed of themselves

Yet again another great advertisement for Asean which will be held in Thailand in 2015, where is the government when real action is needed?

Child brides are normal in Afghanistan, Yemen and places like that. But Thailand ???
