Govt moves to help detained Rohingya

Fears grow of US human trafficking downgrade

Authorities have pledged to look after the 704 Rohingya migrants rounded up in two raids.

The promise comes amid growing concerns that Thailand could face a downgrade on a US human trafficking watch list and risk sanctions by the US.

Immigration officers and police yesterday found a second group of 307 Rohingya migrants including more than a dozen children in a warehouse on the border with Malaysia.

CHARLIE D16: Shall we take your comment seriously? It sounds like you have been listening too much to Alex Jones.

Either way, tossing aside the silliness of your comment, I have compassion for all people. Should I exclude Muslims?

Please. try to get a handle on yourself.

charlie77:" Knowing Obama to be Muslim-raised, I'm sure he has compassion for Muslims anywhere they are. Including his kins in south Thailand!"

Oh charlie, charlie, charlie! (shake my head and LOL)

Remember was it one or two months ago that Obama made "historic" visit to Burma. According to Secretary of State Clinton prior to the visit plight of Rohingyas (in Burma) was to be discussed between Obama and president Thein Sein. Knowing Obama to be Muslim-raised, I'm sure he has compassion for Muslims anywhere they are. Including his kins in south Thailand!

OLDAIRMAN D14: True enough what you say however, there are sticky points.

    1) Can the military really act without total indifference to government? If so, the democrats were even more worthless puppets than many think.

    2) The government itself did not carry out the act but, nor did it condemn the acts; it condoned it.

D12 The last government itself did not tow them out to sea in a leaky boat with no motor. Look elsewhere and a good starting point might be the military.

They shouldn't be separating mothers with children from their husbands/fathers. Families need each other, especially in times like this. I hate that people are treated like chattel in this day and age. These people are desperate, no doubt, but that is no excuse for their mistreatment!

    Families should stay together!

  • Discussion 12 : 12 Jan 2013 at 15.0012

Well at least it is a step in the right direction and better treatment than the last government of towing them out to sea in a leaking boat with no motor and abandoning them there.

    D7 Khun Dao,

Agree with you that the pressure to find a solution needs to go where the problem starts (Burma/Bangladesh Border). Maybe a few of these migrants are planning to stay and work in the Muslim parts of South Thailand, but most are just in transit to Malayasia or Indonesia and some even dream of making it to the "West". Thailand is just a stop enroute.

Thailand is practising slavery in the 21st century. This is a shame on all of us.

Sad day when Thailand will only act to prevent sanctions.
