Prayuth to troops: Stand down at ASTV

Army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha has made a u-turn on protests by soldiers at ASTV Manager and told them to stand down.

The second rally against ASTV Manager on Saturday drew about 30 soldiers from the First Army Region to the media group's offices on Phra Arthit Road. (Photo courtesy of Daily News)

Gen Prayuth thanked his men for protecting the dignity of the army but ordered all unit commanders to stop lashing out at the newspaper, said Col Sansern Kaewkumnerd, the army spokesman.

Freedom of speech is one of the hardest aspects of democracy for people to understand and accept, especially people that are not used to being questioned. It is made doubly more difficult when the opinions expressed are from a group that has always spoken with the arrogance of the self-righteous.

Why should you care about this nonsense PAD, ASTV critic? People are aware of their idiotic facism. We're going into AEC but these PAD dinosaurs still want confrontation and more war. Sondhi and Panthep have cases in court on Govt. House and Parliament siege. Why are they shouting waging war? Is it against their bail conditions? Should they be in jail?

I am think that just like the protest of the retired General that people did not really know, is this another way the army want to test the reaction of the people?

In the US, all US Military active-duty soldiers must surrender their Freedom of Speech because they are living under the US Military Codes of Conduct, which prohibit it. They will get it back when they get out of active duty and resume their civilian lives. If this bunch of "mobs in uniform" were that of the US Military, they would find themselves standing in front of a Court Martial in a heartbeat, and be put in a military jail (Brig) or be dishonorably discharged. I thought I had seen it all in Thailand. Obviously, I was wrong! How low can we get?

"It is inappropriate for the soldiers to rally against the media outlet. They have no such duty," Mr Chavarong said.

Chavarong and the Thai Journalists Association obviously felt it was ok for the army to shoot and kill foreign journalists, but not ok when they midly protested against Limtongkul's media. One wonders why he has so much vested interest in ASTV's rights?
