Officials plan to deport 'illegal' youngsters

The Interior Ministry has come under fire for a Children's Day "gift" that will involve a change in the law and the deportation of stateless children born in Thailand.

SLEEPER OF THE HOUSE: Two-year-old Naruesorn Khunsat takes a nap in the prime minister’s chair during Children’s Day activities at Government House Saturday. Each child was given a three-second photo opportunity in the PM’s chair, but the queue was so long that by the time it was Naruesorn’s turn, he was too tired to smile for the camera.

The legal change will see the children's status altered from one that is indeterminate to "illegal immigrant", allowing them to be deported to their parents' home country.

@dao - Most of the hill tribes in the North were granted Thai citizenship decades ago. As to these "stateless children", presumably they and their parents will return again, which makes it a pointless exercise in cruelty.

These stateless children have no use since they aren't potential PT voters, and should therefore be discarded. That's the mindset of this government. Anyone who hasn't voted or isn't intending to vote PT can go to hell. Pure and simple.

What a despicable act. Hopefully the international press will get hold of this and the UN will make a statement deploring this. Then the government can announce that it was a misunderstanding and hopefully repeal this cruel, inhumane archaic decision.

In any civilized country, children born in that country are considered citizens, regardless of their parents' status.

But, then again Thailand is not a civilized country.

Well done Interior ministers.....showing your true colors. Look at most other civilized countries around the world and the mix of people who live there. In NYC there are over 125 people from various countries who legally live in that city. We know Thailand is a racist country, anybody with dark skin is worthless, just look at all the advertising, newscasters, the elite, the wealthy, the greedy.

Once more, PTP shows their lack of compassion. They don't really care about anybody but themselves. Their populist programs are nothing but vote buying so they can stuff their faces in the public taxpayer trough. Sickening.

"The Interior Ministry's proposal would "make stateless children illegal persons who must be arrested under the Immigration Act and deported from the country", Mr Surapong said."
"Worse, he added, the move completely ignores the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the constitution and the Child Protection Act."

This is the Thailand reds and PTP want.

Mr Surapong suggested the government draft another ministerial law to protect stateless children. It should give birth certificates to the children and give them the opportunity to live in Thailand legally.

    Mr. Surapong is absolutely correct!
