Victims in criminal cases are being encouraged to make claims for compensation, with tens of thousands having failed to exercise their right and leaving more than 250 million baht in an unspent state budget, according to Rights and Liberties Protection Department.
The victims are entitled to file for financial compensation at any justice department provincial office for one year after their court case has been finalised, Narat Sawettanan, the department’s director-general, said on Tuesday.
Unfortunately, many people did not show up to seek remedial payments from the government, resulting in lost opportunities totalling hundreds of millions of baht. Only 18% of eligible people used their right, Mr Narat said.
