Military warns against setting up Rohingya camp

BANGKOK - Thailand would have to shoulder full responsibility for the wellbeing of the Rohingya refuges if a camp was up for them in this country, Supreme Commander Thanasak Patimapakorn warned on Friday.

"It is up to the government to decide whether or not a Rohingya refugee camp is to be established," Gen Thanasak said.

"In terms of humanitarian assistance, we'll initially provide them with food and shelter in accordance to regulations, but in the long run they'll have to leave.

john_l #8: "Clearly no knowledge of either ancient or modern day history."

Fact 1: Rohingyas are ethno-linguistically related to the Indo-Aryan peoples of Bangladesh (as opposed to the Sino-Tibetan people of Myanmar).

Fact 2: There is not a single continent on earth where muslim immigrants and refugees are able to assimilate into society. They have always exploited the goodwill of their host country, demanded and imposed their own religious beliefs on others. Since they refuse to coexist peacefully with others, the only places left for their refuge are those with either camels or polar bears.

I hope we've learned a few lessons with the setting up of Cambodian refugee camp in that 4.8 square km years ago, which that land is now no longer ours. So, never expect others to repay our lovingkindness with their lovingkindness, but with covetousness, cannon shells, and imprisonment of our citizens. Sad, but true!

If Thailand is an islamic country, there would be no problem taking them in. However, since we are a Buddhist country like Myanmar, so whatever problem the Burmese are having with them, we will soon have. So, the best solution is to send them to another islamic country which is willing to take them in so they can feel at home and blend right in.

This story is talking about a boatload. 22 People. Grow up Thailand, I live in Canada and we accept tens of thousands into our country every year. You commenter's are freaking out about 22 people that are part of a group called "the most persecuted people of the world." Shame.

D15: If you think that pacifying a disaffected, poor Muslim group is simply a matter of providing aid, shelter and "being civil", then perhaps you have a solution for Thailand's southern problems? This is a crisis just waiting to be born.

Perhaps the arguement for assistance might be better framed if Thailand considered the amount of merit the nation would make by helping the unfortunate.

What can we expect, Thailand does not often come forward in supporting international issues. It has an enormous military that rarely gets involved in supporting international peacekeeping, though that may be safer for the first world countries that do get stuck in. Look after number one is the motto here.

Very soon all burmese immigrants will go back home because their country seems steady and democratic. Then Thailand would have to face of workers shortage... So in long sight it will be positive to give shelter to the Rohingya refugees... Unfortunately The actually Thai government has short sight...

Thailand should help the Rohingya refugees. It is the morally right thing to do. Besides, it will start to correct the bad reputation Thailand currently has with handling refugees. What Thailand did to Rohingya (and Hmong) refugees during the Abhisit regime was disgraceful.
