Military warns against setting up Rohingya camp

BANGKOK - Thailand would have to shoulder full responsibility for the wellbeing of the Rohingya refuges if a camp was up for them in this country, Supreme Commander Thanasak Patimapakorn warned on Friday.

"It is up to the government to decide whether or not a Rohingya refugee camp is to be established," Gen Thanasak said.

"In terms of humanitarian assistance, we'll initially provide them with food and shelter in accordance to regulations, but in the long run they'll have to leave.

D2 it is not often i find myself on the same side as you but in this matter I do. Others have commented on the Haj style hats they all seem to be wearing and Muslims everywhere do not assimilate. Sending them to Bangladesh is the right move as it sends them home.

Maybe it's a good plan to ask your parents where their parents came from.... China, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Birma, India.. I think you would be surprised to see how Thai you are.

Charities start at home, there are many problems deep south regarding our own Thai muslims, don't look too far to do good deed, Thailand has plenty job to do at its own door steps.

We only need to see the Vietnamese refugee situation in the past to know the scale of socio and economic issues that comes with setting up a refugee camp.

And unlike the Vietnamese, the Rohingya's bring along with them a radical form of Islam. And we know from the horror stories from the US, to Europe, to Asia... how muslim immigrants and refugees failed to assimilate with the local culture and created tensions and violence to those countries that took pity on them and provided them food, security and jobs.

Myanmar should send the Rohingyas to Bangladesh, where they will be right at home in terms of culture and religious practices.

It is a serious position to made as it affects security and resources. Once we adopted a soft position, refugees will arrive in numbers which will made it harder to manage. Many countries will stop the refugees before they enter their waters and provide them with all the food and medical cares before towing them out to international waters. Yes it's inhuman but allowing refugees easy assess will only encourage more to come. The pressure must be put to Mynmar to stop the refugees.
