Mae Sot trade zone gets the nod

Cabinet okays B51bn of projects in lower North

The cabinet has approved a proposal to develop Mae Sot district in Tak province into a special economic zone on the Thai-Myanmar border.

The National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) proposed the project to support the formation of the Asean Economic Community in 2015 and to develop the country's East-West Economic Corridor.

The draft proposal was approved at a mobile cabinet meeting in Uttaradit yesterday. Under regulations for the project that the cabinet has endorsed, the special zone could consist of either a portion or the entire area of Mae Sot district, government spokesman Tossaporn Serirak said.

D12: Yes, I have heard about Dawei and before posting I checked where in Myanmar it is located. Suggest you do the same. It is at the Latitude of Bangkok! So for Mae Sot to Laem Chabang or to Dawei is quite the same distance.

The Mae Sot Trade Zone is not a PT idea. It has been in the works for a number of years, but I am sure PT would like to take credit for it. The idea is to connect to India and Bangladesh through Burma.

Disc. 8. Ever heard the name Dawai deep water port cropping up. OK, it's in Myanmar but when the Asean trade pact takes effect, the route to western markets will be through there rather than going around Singapore. Makes sense to move industry closer.

Less forest and more room for industrialization. I'm guessing the Thais are already making plans to move their labour intensive industries, food canning etc OUT of the 300 baht minimum wage zone?

3Rivers dis#5, this mobile cabinet is really quite unique in ASEAN. None of the ASEAN countries has regular mobile cabinet. Noy Noy only calls for a meeting when there are urgent matters to discuss. Think the last meeting was about China relation vis Spratly. First mooted by Taksin and continued by Yingluck, this is the 8th mobile cabinet in about 2+ years plus meetings at Government house. So all in, the government is very tuned on to the needs of the country. Nothing like having a meeting at the place where you implement policies as you hear and see first hand the needs of the locality.
