Mae Sot trade zone gets the nod

Cabinet okays B51bn of projects in lower North

The cabinet has approved a proposal to develop Mae Sot district in Tak province into a special economic zone on the Thai-Myanmar border.

The National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) proposed the project to support the formation of the Asean Economic Community in 2015 and to develop the country's East-West Economic Corridor.

The draft proposal was approved at a mobile cabinet meeting in Uttaradit yesterday. Under regulations for the project that the cabinet has endorsed, the special zone could consist of either a portion or the entire area of Mae Sot district, government spokesman Tossaporn Serirak said.

It's always very impressive to see a picture or video of a Thai cabinet meeting. It's at least 10 times bigger, and much much more impressive, than Obama's cabinet meetings. And in the tiny Philippines, they don't even hold cabinet meetings because their silly prime minister, Noy Noy is his nickname, doesn't think the meetings really accomplish anything. But in Thailand, things get done. And as we can imagine, this is alos a tremendously great way for imporatnt people to really really show face.

My first thought, in reading the article, was "how often do they have cabinet meetings in the south". Was going to ask that here - but several of you have already beat me to it.

"revoke the protected forest status" the greed for money and we lose more forest. Shame on these people. So the country of Shinland gets all the economic development. And the roads are smooth up there.

Why doesn't Yingluck hold the next cabinet meeting in the South and talk about the investment PTP is going to make there. Oh, they didn't vote PTP? Gotcha.
