Dept boosts illegal ivory fight

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation will invite ivory accessory shops for a briefing this month following complaints that Thailand is a trafficking hub for African ivory.

Theerapat Prayurasiddhi, the department's deputy director-general, said his agency has taken note of concerns that African ivory was being mixed with ivory from local elephants in the production of licensed accessories.

He insisted, however, the country only allows the use of local ivory to make such products. Any use of African ivory is illegal. The department hopes ivory accessory shop operators will better understand the law governing their trade after attending the briefing.
