'Missing' tourist turns up in prison

A 22-year-old Swiss woman reported missing last month has been found in the custody of Ranong police.

Nora Janisch Tscherina last made contact with her family on Dec 22. She arrived in Thailand on Dec 8.

Worrying about her safety, Ms Tscherina's mother posted information about her daughter on websites and social media, which prompted the Tourist Police Division to search for the 22-year-old.

Swiss citizen don't need a visa for Thailand for a stay up to 30 days. A tourist visa would allow her to stay 90 days.

A 22 year old Swiss woman and a Thai policeman with a camera. There has to be more to the story than what's been reported.

BP reporters, for your countries good reputation keep on top of this one. You can be sure we will read about it anyway in Fox and the ABC and BBC news services in another two days.

A 22 years old foreigner "Luang kor ngoo hao" =stolen CAMERA from police? Somehow police can not push 'DRUG CHARGE' which is normal police tactic to derive the money of tourist foreigner, they said stolen camera instead. This damage is done by a few police, but it is greatly affect Thai Tourist Industry.

First of all, Swiss citizens do NOT need a visa for a stay up to 30 days which would let her stay legally in the country until January 7. If she had a tourist visa, then this is valid for 90 days, which would let her stay legally in the country until March 8. If she arrived in Thailand on the Dec 8 and got arrested on Dec 25, then she can't have overstayed, neither with nor without visa. As for a Swiss stealing a camera from an officer.... believe it if you want. Cameras are not that expensive.

    Very fishy
    Poster 1 - Arrested 25 Dec not 22 Jan!
Possible visa expired on a 15 day but why no contact for a month?
Still something not quite right here!

She was an exchange student at National Uni of Singapore and went traveling around Asia alone when her program finished. Let's hope the 'stealing a camera from an immigration official thing' gets resolved. If it's the reason for throwing her in jail, [ overstaying a tourist visa by a couple of days certainly isn't ], the cops down there have a bit of explaining to do.

"She arrived in Thailand on Dec 8...Ms Tscherina had also overstayed her tourist visa, which had expired on Dec 22." - above article

From December 8th to 22nd is 14 days. The shortest Visa Thailand offers is a 15 day border run visa.

    Reference Discussion #1;
How about reading the article properly?
It clearly states she was arrested on 25th December after allegedly stealing a camera.

    I agree with disc 1+2
Something very fishy here. Think she was arrested to get her to give the police money.
But now it has gone international they make up a story about trying to steal a camera.
I think she should sue for false arrest when she gets out.
Also how could here visa have expired arrived on 8th DEC Caught ob Dec 25 17 days? unless she did a border run for a 15 day visa

You overstay your visa & then (if true) attempt to steal an official's camera?!?

Oh well, "Stupid is as stupid does..."
