Thailand rice exports hit 12-year low

Rice exports from Thailand plunged 37 per cent last year to the lowest in more than a decade, plunging the nation from best in the world to third place.

Thailand sold 6.73 million (metric) tonnes with a value of $4.63 billion, the Ministry of Commerce said Wednesday.

That compares with 10.7 million tonnes, worth $6.43 billion a year earlier, data showed.

Trade deficit announced yesterday 540 billion baht: Rice purchase loss forecast at 440 billion baht. Where are the economists?

What can one expect from a government, which is run by a convicted fugitive, who uses wildly impractical populist policies to buy his way into power and to enrich himself, his friends, and the people who will ensure that he stays in power by making the farmers continue to chant, "We love Thaksin. He loves us!". The Thais should really look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves whether voting for such a person is really such a good thing after all. Worse is to come this year according to the Thai Rice Exporters Association.

I am sure some MP will still claim that Thailand is #1

I think we should have a basic Economic Exam for the next PM of Thailand of "do" and "don't" in Economics. For the current PM, however, it is too late as the damage is already done!

Is this not the ultimate example of a government that hasn't got a clue about economics? Their wonderful buying scheme has resulted in millions of tons of rice they cannot sell, because the price is too high, while other countries are buying cheap rice from India and Vietnam.
I didn't realise the "special price for foreigners" extended to rice!

Congratulations, Prime Minister! You have caused untold damages to Thailand with another of your ill-conceived populist schemes.
