Malaysians arrive for second wives

A Songkhla provincial mosque has become a popular destination for Malaysia's married Muslim men looking for a valid second marriage – or even third and fourth – after their polygamous request is rejected by their first wife, whose permission is required.

The mosque is frequently busy organising Nikah -- a simple Muslim wedding ceremony in which a man and a woman declare their commitment as husband and wife -- for about 10-30 pairs of brides and grooms, mostly Malaysians, every day, Chem Hemman, vice president of Songkhla Islamic Committee, said on Thursday.

The event is held in a specially arranged room at the mosque, with a simple decorative heart shaped floral arch for photo opportunities installed in front of it.

First of All it's totally illegal to get married without your 1st wife consent. So wife can take any legal action against the person.

Dear fried of Discussion 5: I don't' think you are not that knowledgeable about Islam. BTW wife is never a salve in Islam. She have equal rights.

AusWilson #3, The BKK Post changed the heading, before it read "Bangkok Post : Muslim men head south to marry again" and now it reads "Malaysians arrive for second wives". The BKK Post understood their "strange" use of the English language and rectified it. To call this news-speak is misleading, there is no such thing, read better #2 is my advise;-)

    Disc 5

The 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. wife has no rights under islam. In most cases, they end up being servants of the the 1st wife.

When I lived in the Gulf, the daughter of a friend of mine from NZ started dating what she thought was a single, Emirati man. She converted to islam and married him, only to find afterwards, that in fact he had a principle wife already. She soon discovered that not only did she have no rights, but that she was nothing better than a nanny and housewife, waiting hand and foot on wife #1.

I think it would be useful for tourists entering the country to be given a list of things that are illegal and prohibited in Thailand (e.g. recreational drugs, farang owning land), and a list of things that are illegal but tolerated (e.g. prostitution, extortion, working illegally, and now polygamy).

These men and women have the freedom to do whatever they please as long as it does not harm anyone else (in this case it may harm their first wife!). If all is consensual, then bless their hearts.

Can someone clarify two things for me:

First, does Islam really accept that if your first wife says "no", then it is OK to go to another country and get married (again)?

Second, are these marriages registered? Last time I checked 9 years ago, it is illegal to have two (official, ie registered) wives in Thailand. If they are not registered, how many of these second/third/fourth wives have any security in their relationship whatsoever, and will end up dumped at the drop of a hat?
