Cops filmed 'extorting cashier'

Police were caught on video apparently extorting a woman cashier, demanding she post 50,000 baht bail for allegedly conspiring to sell counterfeit goods - a charge she says she vigorously denied.

The clip was uploaded to YouTube on Thursday by a user who went by the name Mild Pond, and was shared throughout the web.

The reputed victim posted on her Facebook page under the username Mild Love Jrt , saying that she worked as a cashier at a shopping mall in Bangkok. A copyright owner came to investigate the stall where she was working  and found that it was distributing counterfeit products.

I agree with you that reporting it to higher level is useless because they are in it too. Best thing is to send the video to be published in youtube and if possible with a little appropriate song.

After reading this article and watching this video, would Bangkokians elect a cop as governor?

Can a country, in which virtually the entire police force are criminals, be called civilized? Or should we call it medieval?

Amazing that the BiB should flaunt their corrupt tactics so brazenly. Counterfeit goods must be a terrific earner for them all across Thailand.

Are they getting more stupid or more powerful.

CWN: it's not just farangs who are caught up by corruption here in Thailand. The Thai's have it much worse. How'd you like to make 300B/day and get stopped by a cop for extortion payments of 100-200B on your way home.

It's horrible what these corruption government officials are doing here. Inexcusable and the PM should be held responsible.

Heading south and turning left into the street where the Hua Hin Police Head Quarter is located there is a sign in English 'Left turn permitted on red'. I turned left and was stopped by Police (in front of Police Station), they said I made an illegal left turn (red light). I had to pay or spend hours waiting in the station. The money disappeared into the cops back pocket, no receipt. I paid many times in Bkk for 'late lane change', sometimes 2000 baht. Many shops in Koh Samui pay extortion money to the police, they are the local Mafia. Thai police will not be intimated by a photo or video taken. To whom would you report anyway, the Minister?

Technology is great but people are afraid of retaliation. There is a police scam on every corner and nothing is done. A local favourite is a urine test for drugs (10 - 20 van drivers and van boys at the side of the road in the bushes) owneers of the vans have to pay 5,000 per person or the van and boys are impounded over night. I cannot find any roadside urine test on the web.

The last time in Thailand, I was stopped for an "illegal" turn by a motorcycle cop and shaken down. As I handed him a couple hundred baht, my wife took his picture with her phone. He started screaming and telling her to give him her phone. We just drove off and watched him screaming and shaking his fist. Part of me expected him to jump on his motorcycle and come after us, but of course he didn't have the guts. It was worth 200 baht to see his reaction.
As people continue to use cell phones to record video and take pictures, cops will be at risk every time they shake someone down. Hopefully, this will be a case where technology helps stop it.
