Thailand set to reclaim top spot in rice sales

Rice shipments from Thailand are poised to surge 15 per cent this year to help the country win back the top-exporter slot.

Government sales are accelerating from its record stockpiles, an industry group said Wednesday.

Exports may climb to 8 million metric tonnes this calendar year, assuming sales of 1.5 million tonnes from state inventories, from 6.95 million tonnes in 2012, said the Thai Rice Exporters Association (TREA).

Cynicism, skepticism will not help Thailand move forward and prosper and be counted in the international arena. Visionary, bold undaunted courage, hard work, creativity, sincerity will help. The world does not belong to those who are cynical, skeptical, complaining, self righteous.

They have to dump that much just to make room for the new crop. Storage capacity is maxed out. There is no place to store the new crop, as the older stored rice slowly deteriorates, and becomes worth even less on the market.

You have to laugh at their efforts to look on the bright side sometimes. Thai Rice 5% = US$599 Vietnam Rice 5% = US$390. Thai Rice 10% = US$593 Vietnam Rice 10% = US$385. Thailand's rice exports are surely "poised" to surge! Just like the election assurance that there will be no more poor people in Thailand in 4 years (as promised 1.6 years ago). But, the people seem to believe anything that the politicians tell them, so keep on with the promises, dear leaders, and make the people happy!

Once again, the headline of the story looks as though it was lifted from a story that has much different facts then this story contained. This appears to be more of the old, "the obvious facts have no bearing on the outcome".

From what I can read into the post it is just another pile of useless words.
Government sales are accelerating from its record stockpiles. Show us where?
Exports may climb to 8 million metric tonnes this calendar year, assuming sales of 1.5 million tonnes from state inventories. And if they don't?
The 8-million-ton target will be achieved as the government has to speed up government-to-government sales. Proof please.
The strength of Thailand's currency against the dollar may hamper rice sales. Of course it will making expensive rice even more so.

    "Poised to surge"? Come on.

    > "Thailand will be more aggressive in terms of exporting the rice," Samarendu Mohanty, a senior economist at the International Rice Research Institute, said in an email dated Wednesday. "It has no other choice."

Well clearly Mr. Mohanty is making the mistake of applying logic and the imperative of "profits" to an administration that understands neither. There is simply no way that exports will rise in parallel with a rising baht.

...should surge 15 % this year...
...shipments tumbled 35 per cent last year...

Reclaim top spot again this year?
I don't get it. For me this is still minus 25%.

So what, is it a football match?!?"
