Cabinet nod for draft Thammasat bill

The cabinet on Tuesday approved a draft bill seeking to allow Thammasat University to be an independent agency outside the bureaucratic system and a juristic entity under the supervision of the state, deputy government spokesman Pakdihan Himathongkham said.

Under the bill, Thammasat University would not be governed by the local administration law, the Education Ministry's administrative regulations, or laws on restructuring of ministries and departments.

It would also not be classified as a state enterprise.

Thammasat University when founded by Pridi Bhanomyong was completely independent. Even the land for the Tha Prajan campus was purchased with public donations. Thamasat remained independent until after a military coup, when its funds were siezed and it was made a government university. All this really would be doing is returning to the original system of administration.

An independent agency subsidized by the government. OK, got it.
